COMPLIANCE WITH QIBLA DIRECTION CORRECTIONS IN MOSQUES DURING RASHDUL KIBLAT IN THE MUSTIKA JAYA DISTRICT OF BEKASI CITY
This study was motivated by inaccuracies in the qibla directions at several older mosques in Mustika Jaya Subdistrict, which were generally measured in the past on the assumption that they faced due west. Although the annual astronomical event known as Rashdul Kiblat offers an easy and accurate method of calibration, the response and level of compliance by the Mosque Prosperity Council (DKM) in adjusting the orientation of the congregants’ prayer mats on-site vary widely. The main issue in this study is the extent of DKM compliance with qibla direction corrections and the factors influencing these administrators' attitudes.
The research methods employed were qualitative and empirical juridical approaches, drawing on the sociology of Islamic law. Primary data were collected through direct observation of mosques and in-depth interviews with DKM administrators in the Mustika Jaya subdistrict.
The results of the study show that DKM compliance is divided into three main groups: active compliance (4 mosques), conditional compliance (3 mosques), and passive compliance (5 mosques). Cognitive factors, such as the level of understanding of Islamic astronomy and contemporary astronomical methods (e.g., the use of the Mizwala instrument), are the primary determinants of administrators’ initial responses. However, sociocultural factors—such as the strong collective memory associated with older buildings and a reluctance to challenge the influence of senior figures often hinder the implementation of prayer row adjustments in residential areas. In addition, administrative barriers were identified, as DKM administrators lacked an understanding that the qibla calibration service provided by the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) is a passive service requiring a formal request letter from the DKM beforehand.
